Situated on the hillside above the village of Domremy-la-Pucelle, the Basilique Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc (also known as the Basilique du bois chenu) is a monument of national recognition to Joan of Arc.
The foundation stone for the building was laid on November 3, 1881, in the immediate vicinity of the place where Joan is said to have heard her voices. Architect Paul Sédille was commissioned to build the monument.
In 1891, the crypt named "Crypte Notre-Dame des Armées" was opened.
The Stairway of Peace was inaugurated in 1946. It leads from the crypt to the basilica, and is decorated with the coats of arms of the towns where Joan passed.
Inside, the basilica is decorated with large mosaics and paintings by Lionel Royer depicting the life of Joan of Arc.
