Meuse Argonne american cemetery

Located 40 kilometres to the north-west of Verdun and to the east of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, the cemetery nestles in a valley and is laid out over 130 acres of parkland. It shelters the tombs of the largest number of American military dead in Europe with 14,246 men interred within its grounds, 486 of whom were never identified. Each of the men has a simple headstone of white marble and at the summit, a chapel holding The Tablets of the Missing, engraved with the names of 954 missing American soldiers.
