Eglise fortifiée de Rancon

Rancon church was built at the end of the 12th century. It has been restored and transformed many times over the centuries. In particular, it was fortified following the destruction of the Château des seigneurs de Rancon in the early 15th century. As an integral part of the fortifications surrounding the village, it became a defensive element in its own right during this troubled period. Shooting bays and machicolations were added to the top of the building's chevet. The bell tower is the most recent element of the present-day edifice, dating from the 16th century. It is a bulbous bell tower covered with chestnut shingles.
