Monument de la Rappe

Monument de la Rappe
Credit : OT Baccarat

Description

On the 25th August 1914, several soldiers of the 38th Regiment (from Saint-Etienne) settle at beginning of the Wood of La Rappe, in order to avoid the german threat on the left side of french soldiers in Baccarat. As early as the first shoots coming from the bridge in Baccarat, the german soldiers move forward.
These german soldiers shoot on french soldiers, that take refuge in the Wood of La Rappe. A violent fight start, that last lot of hours.
After the battle, there have been about 400 died people within the 2 camps, and as many as injured men. Several cemeteries and collective pits were setted up.
On the site of the biggest cemetery, to remind the killed soldiers, this Memorial with a big white cross was erect in 1927.
The dead bodies of soldiers were transfered about year 1925 to the National Cemetery of Badonviller.
