Fountains of raon l'etape

Fountains are one of the characteristics of the town and worth the trip for a more detailed visit. The embellishing of the environment began in the 19th century when the standard of living was high: the abundance and the purity of water and high incomes were the reasons why those fountains have been built. Instead of simple drinking troughs, masterpieces have been built!

Since 1860, the town is covered of fountains made of cast iron from Haute Marne. There are 12 fountains in total including 11 which are in the Monument Historique classification.
Their style is inspired by the Greco-Latin mythology and its allegories: 5 Diana, Minerva, Concordia, Automne, Bonheur are in the best classical tradition. The impressive fountain of the four lions with the appearance of griffins is the leading fountain and the emblem of Raon l’Etape.
Guided visits are organised all year long for groups (reservation required) and every Wednesday in summertime.
