The chapel dates from the 19th century, and was the place of pilgrimage for many Christians. It was erected in honor of the stele, which is above its roof, which according to Christian tradition, represents the Holy Mary Magdalene, Mary Jacobe, and Mary Salome, who came to Saintes-Maries-de-la -Mer to convert the region. It is said that it was actually three Roman characters, which included the general Caius Marius and his wife Julia, aunt of Julius Ceasar.
