Saint-Léon is Anglet?s oldest church, built in 1557 after the dismantling of Bayonne?s Saint-Léon chapel. According to some sources, it has preserved the small Romanesque vault and Gothic choir openings of the original chapel.
Saint-Léon church boasts magnificent stained-glass windows by English glass masters Jean Lesquibes (1910-1995) and Charles Carrère (1927-2021). The church has undergone many restorations over the centuries, retaining its typical Labourdine interior.
The interior also features a 1912 organ, built by Bordeaux organ builder Gaston Maille and completely rebuilt by Dax organ builder Robert Chauvin in 1971 and again in 1981. More recently, in 2023, the large wooden door was replaced, a remarkable piece of carpentry carried out by the Compagnons du Tour de France, Claude Imbert.
