Description

Blanchelande Abbey was built in the middle of the 12th century by the barons of La Haye-du-Puits, then entrusted to the Premonstratensian monks. The religious establishment suffered the ravages of the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. It was sold as national property in 1791, then abandoned and its abbey church destroyed in the mid-19th century. The site was the backdrop for Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly's famous novel "L'Ensorcelée", published in 1852. After being occupied by nuns, the site came under the ownership of various purchasers, and in 2023 became an exceptional site set in the heart of a verdant 25-hectare park dominated by a lake reflecting the 18th-century abbey dwelling.
