Among the 160 towns that Vauban fortified or upgraded, Longwy is one of the 9 new towns that the king’s engineer built from scratch, giving the finest illustration of his ideas for an ideal town. Longwy’s fortress was equipped with all the commodities required by a fort in time of war. One-half of the town’s walls have survived. Other sites worth visiting are the Puits du Siège, St. Dagobert’s Church, the France Gate, the Town Hall, the military bakery, the cross-shaped bunker, the powder magazine etc. The fortifications are on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. 3 guided tours per week.
