Amblagnieu Church

Description

Standing on a rocky headland known as "Le Plâtre", the church's square belltower features single and triple windows (twin or triplet bays). It originally had a thackstone roof.
The church features a nave, a chancel and 5 chapels, 3 on the north side and 2 on the south side. These add to the building's picturesque charm and some of them have separate entrances. In the chancel, above one of the chapel doorways, the stone is engraved with a medallion and the names of the church's patron saints, Saint Andréa and Saint Laurent. The keystone of the ribbed vault features the coat of arms of the De Vertrieu family of which the former Lord of Amblagnieu was a member.
After its restoration by the town council, the fresco located in the south chapel was analysed.
The study of the pictorial layer revealed the presence of an ancient decor of great historical value dating from the church's construction in the 13th century. "It is said that Angels appeared."
