The Lisieux Museum of Art and History is the result of the merger of two museums: a fine arts museum and a history museum. The former dates back to the early days of French museums, having been founded in 1833 thanks to François Guizot; the second, the Musée du Vieux Lisieux, was established in 1930. Visiting the museum today means discovering rich collections on the history of Lisieux, from the Gallo-Roman settlement to its timber-framed townscape, which was destroyed during the Second World War. It also means immersing yourself in works by renowned artists such as Eugène Boudin and Gustave Courbet, or by local artists who depict the Normandy landscape. It means admiring the exceptional decorative ceramics from the Pré d’Auge.
Visiting the Museum of Art and History means stepping inside one of Lisieux’s last remaining half-timbered houses, travelling back in time, learning about history, and being moved.
