In the 19th century, Châtellerault's theater was at the heart of the town's artistic and cultural life. Modelled on Italian-style theaters, its horseshoe-shaped auditorium was redecorated in 1899. The stage house is a rare example in France of Italian-style machinery: under-stage trussing and carts, wooden poles and drums, wires and windlasses, pulleys, scenery on frames...
With its restored period sets and machinery, it is both a heritage site and a place for artistic creation, thanks to the discreet integration of recent equipment. Grand Châtellerault's Pays d'Art et d'Histoire department offers guided tours by prior arrangement. On the program: discover the ceremonial areas (peristyle, foyer, etc.) and the stage curtain, stroll from the parterre to the henhouse, visit part of the machinery and the scenery store, etc.
