Charles Atamian (1872-1947) was a French painter of Armenian origin, born in Constantinople. After moving to Paris in 1897, he discovered Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie in 1923, where he spent almost all his summers until 1939.
Atamian was famous for his beach paintings, capturing the everyday life of holidaymakers with natural light and vibrant colours. He painted around two hundred pictures in Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie, often "on the spot", which gave them authenticity and spontaneity.
He used the painting knife to create rich textures and striking light effects, with dynamic, detailed compositions.
His stays in Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie were crucial to his artistic development, enabling him to create some of his most emblematic works.
