Menhirs du Métayer

Description

Listed as historic monuments on November 9, 1984, the two menhirs, some one hundred metres apart, are made of grano-diorite. The first menhir is a long, raised stone, measuring 4.16 metres above ground and 1.04 metres below ground, and is one of the most imposing megalithic monuments in the Haute-Vienne. The second, considerably smaller, stands in the meadow, overlooking the Âme de l'âne stream.

Like many of the megaliths in the Haute-Vienne, this monument is the subject of legends, two of which are still known today:

"It is said that at night, if you approach it at certain times of the year, you can hear men talking loudly, but without being able to understand their conversation. The legend associates three large stones in the meadow with the menhir, and the legend states that the head of the Blessed Virgin left its imprint on one of the stones
