Le Port de Saint Jean de Luz

The port of Saint-Jean-de-luz was one of the great fishing ports of France. There was the heyday of whale and cod fishing. At that time, the rich shipowners built the most beautiful houses which today make the charm of the city.
Then the port acquired its notoriety with the sardine and tuna fishing. Several boats (baitboats and pole-and-line vessels) have left their mark on the history of Basque fishing. Today, the fishing port is home to a quality artisanal fishing industry concerned with preserving the resource. The Saint-Jean-de-Luz hake is representative of this approach.
