The history of La Petite Pierre goes back almost to the dawn of time. Already in Celtic times, a dalt route ran through this pass. Then, in Roman times, it was a junction of important routes on the Via Bassoniaca which linked Alsace to Lorraine. This strategic importance explains the rich heritage of the site and in particular the presence of a castle which served to protect and control it.
The present castle was built at the end of the 12th century. Today it features vestiges from the 13th to the 18th centuries.
