Founded around 1117 in a solitary valley near Archigny by the hermit Isembaud, in memory of his brother Pierre de l'Etoile, founder and first abbot of Fontgombault (Indre), the Abbey de l'Etoile joined the Cîteaux order in 1145, following in the footsteps of Pontigny (Yonne).
It was built according to the typical plan of 12th-century Cistercian monasteries, and even today l'Etoile is one of the most representative architectural ensembles of its kind in central-western France, despite a number of alterations in the 15th and 17th centuries.
