The Cuttura Priory was created in 1190 on the Tacon’s right embankment, just below the village, by the lords of Chatillon-en-Michaille, a municipality in the Ain département 30 km away. In 1231, ownership of the priory was transferred to the Saint-Claude Abbey.
But in 1639, both the priory and the village of Les Bouchoux (which was then located where the small hamlet of “les Petits Bouchoux” now stands) were destroyed in a fire. The Priory was rebuilt in the same place, but the village was moved to the promontory overlooking the Tacon valley, which is where it still stands today.
