Once quite widespread, the white-clawed crayfish is now only found in a few rivers in the Jura. It seeks fresh running water, where there is enough oxygen for it to survive. During the day, it hides in the pebbles on the waterbed. The female protects her eggs under her belly all winter. Her larvae hatch in May or June. Second to pollution, diseases carried by American species introduced into French water are its most dangerous enemies. Therefore, please do not move any white-clawed crayfish, or any other crayfish!
