This is a small atypical fold in the Jura’s pleated structure. Its very tight anticline shape is the result of the cramming of a series of superficial limestone layers together, dating back to the Cretaceous period, and caused by the overlapping of the Molunes anticline and the Septmoncel syncline. The marl banks between the layers of limestone facilitated the spectacular detachment and folding to which it owes its reputation and name. Lastly, this disharmonic fold has been shaped by the same erosion that has slowly created the Flumen wind gap over the last few millions of years.
