There is no shortage of stone in Jura soil. Scattered across the terrain and hindering the optimal production of grass to feed livestock, farmers have always been at war with stone. Making the most of the abundance of these materials, they used the stones on their terrain to delimit parcels and sometimes to create enclosures for the herds, using more or less sophisticated low walls that are always full of charm. You will also see large mounds of stones in the middle of fields. Called “murger” or “murgiers”, the stones were gathered in the same place as there was no need to build a low wall. From this colossal manual work carried out long ago, a whole set of micro-systems was born, serving as markers in the rural landscape and full of biodiversity (micro fauna, rodents, insects, flora, etc.) that must be preserved.
