It was in the 20th century that the beaches of the Côte des Isles became very popular, at a time when sea bathing was booming, aided by the Paris-Carteret rail link.
Since then, they have continued to delight young and old alike, sheltered from the Atlantic swell by the Channel Islands and warmed by the Gulf Stream.
In the shape of a horseshoe, at the foot of the Cap de Carteret, the success of Plage de la Potinière dates back to the heyday of sea bathing.
The years have passed since then, but the blue-and-white bathing cabins are still there, bearing witness to that era.
Like the famous Place Deauvillaise of the same name, it's easy to imagine that the "Potinière" was a meeting place for socialites to exchange gossip.
