Sainte-Claire de Saint-Hérent Church

Description

Between the Val d'Allier and the Cézallier, this site, located off the beaten track, is nevertheless a fascinating place. Located on a rocky spur, the site, composed of the cemetery and the church, follows the shape of the rock.
They occupy the site delimited by the enclosure of the disappeared castle, on a vertiginous peaked ridge above the gorges of Saint-Hérent.
Saint-Claire Church is a Romanesque building from the 11th or early 12th centuries, with a double bell tower wall. At the end of the cemetery is the conical roof of the Ynard tower, named after the first known lord of the area. It was used for a long time as an ossuary. Below, in an inaccessible site, the local tradition places a cave that would have welcomed Saint Herem, a hermit of the 4th century.
