On the edge of the Allier valley, the pre-Romanesque church, rebuilt in the late 12th century, sits atop a basalt plateau.
Excavations on this site have brought to light various remains from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. The church was built on the site of an earlier sanctuary that legend attributes to the evangelizer Saint-Baudime. Legend has it that this evangelizer struck down a monstrous creature that was terrorizing the inhabitants.
The church also boasts a Virgin in Majesty, the object of a pilgrimage in September. The capitals in the square of the transept and apse are remarkable for their non-classical craftsmanship: the shape of the baskets, the low relief, the simplicity of the geometric or plant motifs.
