Sainte Marie de Foncouverte Chapel

The chapel is located in the hamlet of Foncouverte in Névache, accessible by car iduring Summer season, snow shoe or ski in Winter. The chapel has become an emblem of the Clarée Valley.

This chapel built in 1627 along the road of the Upper Valley, would have been at the place of a miraculous source hidden by bushes. Hence its name 'Covered Fountain'.
Classified as a Historical Monument since 1946, it stands proudly on its rock overlooking the imposing bar of the Queyrellin in the background.

Founded by a member of the Maritan family, it still belongs to their descendants.
Like many chapels in the upper valley, its roof is made of larch shingle. Composed of two small buildings adjoining each other, its opening is protected by a simple clerestory with larch bars framing the door that closes the porch.
