The Sea of Sand

Description

And suddenly, a vast expanse of fine sand in the middle of the Poligny forest...
Within the wood, the ground changes, the trees are more spaced out and let appear rocks subjected to erosion and the passing of time. Then, behind a hillock, the field of vision opens up and reveals a vast expanse of fine sand...

The Mer de Sable is now far from its mining past. From 1910 onwards, it was mined for its quality sandstone and sand. The production was transported by an aerial conveyor to the Loing canal at Bagneaux-sur-Loing. The mine stopped at the beginning of the 1950s and remains of this era can be seen nearby.

Forbidden to motorised sports, it is the ideal place for hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and orienteering!

This is why the 6 unmarked hiking trails allow you to enjoy an exceptional natural setting.
