522 Congress Street
Beaux-Arts, 1904 & 1911
Rich with sculptural detail, the Porteous, Mitchell & Braun Block (today the Maine College of Art) is a handsome commercial example of Beaux-Arts Classicism. Cherub heads enliven the capital of the main composite, order pilasters (faux column) and shorter ionic pilasters above the wide entabulature, the section that sits on the pilasters. Note the rondels with crest and the garlands on the upper story brackets of the cornice. All are carved in limestone. George Burnham were the architects.
