From here another lake covered in white is visible, it is the Sickle Lake. Whether it is the first lake or this one or the Besson lake that you will finally discover, they are all of glacial origin.
During the Ice Age, the whole of the Grandes Rousses massif (named after the rusty colour of the rock) was completely covered by ice. In the areas where the rock is softer, as on this route, the glaciers dug and overgrew the depression areas. The erosive digging by the ice leaves a deeper hole than if it had been dug by water. Here are some witnesses of a distant era that shaped our Alpine landscapes today.
