St. Lucy's Chapel

Description

The Chapel of Saint Lucy dates from the 16th century. It is notable for the frescoes depicting the Lamentation that adorn its façade, as well as the frescoes on the interior vault that depict the life of Jesus.
On June 23, 1507, the residents of Puy-Chalvin obtained permission to build a chapel in their hamlet. Originally dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, it is now dedicated to Saint Lucy.

The chapel is a small building with a barrel vaulted ceiling, opening to the east.
The façade features magnificent frescoes, divided into three sections separated by a frieze of interlaced plant motifs. In the center is the Lamentation, a theme related to the chapel’s original patron saint.

In this scene, you can see Saint Christopher on the left, who protected against sudden death, and Saint Lucy on the right, along with Saint Barbara, protector against lightning, Saint Andrew, patron of the parish, and Saint Anthony the Hermit. These works are likely by a Piedmontese or Lombard artist.

Inside, on the vaulted ceiling, the life of Jesus is depicted in 23 scenes, separated by bands. Also noteworthy is a magnificent 16th-century altarpiece, as well as a large painting depicting the Lamentation and Saint Lucy from 1706, signed by F. Cherronier.
