In 1345, the Hermits of Saint Augustin bought grounds on the left bank of the Lot. There, they built a chapel, a monastery and a cemetery. The buildings of the monastery were enlarged, houses clustered round it and formed « the new town » (the old town was situated on the right bank, next to the castle and the parish church).
At the end of the 16th c., the monastery was nearly a ruin. During the 17th c., the monks appealed to the King in order to receive help. As a result the castle of Saint-Geniez was demolished and its materials were offered to the monks to restore their monastery. The new buildings had a square plan surrounding a cloister. The monastery accommodated up to 25 monks.
During the French Revolution, the monks were expelled from the Monastery and deprived of their properties.
The mayor decided to buy the buildings. They were occupied by the town council.
A local producers market is inside the cloister on Saturday morning all year and on Wednesday morning during summer.
The entrance of the cloister is free, all year long.
The entrance of the chapel is free, from 9 am to 19 pm. The entrance is rue de l'Hôtel de VIlle
