Toul is the only town in Lorraine to retain a city wall. It has developed all forms of fortifications: from the ancient rampart of the 3rd century, a major fortified town was born, renovated in line with technical progress and the town's development. A new, unfinished enclosure with nine bastions and three gates. Until 1914, 15 forts and works formed Toul's new ramparts, just a few kilometers from the old enclosure. The Porte de Metz is the only surviving original Vauban gate. The Porte d'Eau, dating from the 18th century, features an entire system of sluice gates at the city's water outlet. The Porte Moselle, rebuilt in 1882, is elaborately decorated with false machicolations. The more sober Porte de France remains beautifully crafted. The Porte Jeanne d'Arc was built in 1901.
An itinerary dedicated to the town's ramparts is available from the Maison du tourisme.
