Beyssac

Description

Located in the Correze countryside, the commune of Beyssac is home to La Rivière, a former national mare farm (now privately owned), and the Glandier Charterhouse, founded in the early 13th century by the Viscount of Comborn. This chartreuse was the scene of one of the most famous criminal cases of the 19th century: the Lafarge Affair. Accused of poisoning her husband, a blacksmith at Le Glandier, with arsenic, Marie Capelle Lafarge was convicted of the crime. However, doubts remain as to her guilt.
A stele in memory of Innocent VI, born Etienne Aubert, stands on the private estate of Les Monts. Born in Beyssac at Les Monts, he was Pope in Avignon in the 14th century.
