RUNRIKET

In the area around Lake Vallentuna there are unusually many rune stones from the late Viking Age. In fact, in no other place in the world are there as many rune stones as right here. The inscriptions tell moving stories of the lives and fates of people in ancient times. The events took place a thousand years ago, often exactly where the stone now stands. We call this area “The Rune Kingdom.” Here you can wander in the beautiful landscape and explore history on your own. The entranceway to the Rune Kingdom is easy to find, and around the lake are eight more points to discover.

Once upon a time, a 

long, long time ago...


...about a thousand years ago to be more precise, there lived a woman called Estrid. This was during the age of the Vikings, when the land around Vallentunasjön was inhabited by powerful clans In a time of intrepid voyages, grand claims to power and a belief in change, this was the place that the Viking woman Estrid and her family called home for several generations.  

A thousand years may seem a long time, but in this unique district, ancient history will feel like present day. Nowhere else in the world can boast as many well-preserved runic inscriptions as the area around the lake Vallentunasjön, inscriptions  which help bring the characters of the Viking Age back to life.
