Saint-Ayoul Church

Description

Built in 11th century, a great fire partiatly destroyed the church in 1157. The church was rapidly restored thanks to the explotation of its relics.
Being the addition of varied architectural styles, Saint Ayoul church is a composite monument. The transept still has its 11th century's aspect, the nave from 13th century and early 16th. The frontage is simple whereas the interior is of a great complexity. Awfully mutilated, the main gate of the frontage mentions the golden age of gothic era with its statues. The frontcourt of the church was the first place of trade and fairs in Provins. In 1990, the monument was enriched by and exceptional gate with bronze sculptures made by the contemporary artist Georges Jean Clos ( 1933-1998).
