
At the start of the Battle of the Bulge, the 7th US Armoured Division set up a depot for food, fuel and ammunition in Samrée. The German 116th Panzer Division “Windhund” took the depot on 20 December 1944 and refuelled its vehicles. In the days that followed, elements of the 560th Volksgrenadier Division occupied the village. On 6 January, American artillery began shelling German positions. A few days later, the 2nd American Armoured Division liberated the village, which had been devastated by some 12,000 shells.Next to the war memorial, a plaque is affixed to the wall in gratitude to the 82nd Armoured Reconnaissance Battalion, which fought in and around Samrée.
