CROIX DU JARANCEAU

CROIX DU JARANCEAU
Credit : OTRP

Description

Known as the Jérenceau or Jaranceau cross, this crossroads cross dates from 1626 and was restored in 1750. On one side, Christ with a flattened chest, girded by a heavy drapery, is depicted. On the right, under the arm of the cross, is Saint Magdalene, her head veiled, while on the left is Saint John. On the reverse, the square-jawed Virgin holds the naked Child on her lap. Saint Paul is shown holding his keys to the shaft, a symbol of his authority.

Listed as a historic monument since 1926, it is one of 145 crosses in the Val-d'Ajol and forms part of the largest Way of the Cross in Christendom.
