The village used to be accessible via two entrances located at either end of the town, which was protected by a semi-circular fortified wall.
The pillar of the St Symphorien gate is still visible on the square, Place Antonin Chanoz.
The other gate, Porte Murine (so named because it faces the Maurienne valley) was located at the top of the steps on Rue Blanche.
A single shopping street called "Grand Vie" used to cross the fortified village. This has since been renamed Rue Ravier in honour of the painter.
