Une vallée glaciaire
Description
La particularité de cette vallée est d'abriter à la fois un glacier blanc dont la glace cumulée reste affleurante et un glacier noir composé de glace recouverte de rochers. Leurs langues glaciaires fluctuent au fil des conditions climatiques, ce qui contribue fortement à façonner le paysage. Une lithographie de 1854 représente les deux glaciers se rejoignant au Pré de Madame Carle, dix ans avant la première ascension de la Barre des Ecrins. Le glacier Blanc a perdu plus de 2 kilomètres de longueur entre 1885 et les années 2000.
