Cette rivière prend sa source à 816 m d’altitude au sud de Felletin sur le plateau de Millevaches. Elle court sur 264 km et traverse la Creuse, l’Indre, l’Indre-et-Loire et la Vienne puis se jette dans la Vienne. Son nom serait d’étymologie celtique qui signifie «vallée profonde».
