The Méandre du Saugey is located in Brangues, and is part of the National Natural Reserve of the Haut Rhône Français. It is a dead arm of the Rhône.
This site is home to very diverse environments: willows, reed beds, floodplain meadows. More than a dozen remarkable plants have been identified, including Water Violet, Greater Spearwort, Brittle Waternymph, and Snake's Head Fritillary. There are also more than 80 species of birds (Little Egret, Hobby Falcon, Purple Heron, Kingfisher, etc.) as well as remarkable dragonflies (including the Emperor Dragonfly).
The National Natural Reserve of the Haut-Rhône Français stretches for 25 kilometres between the Champagneux dam and downstream of the Malarage gorge. It is the largest forest river reserve in France.
