This farm was created by the Hospitallers of the Order of Malta in the late 12th century after Count Gilles de Duras had granted them Saint Médard’s church in Jodoigne and the tithe of Huppaye. They set up the ‘Commandery of Chantraine’ which became the capital of the bailiwick of Avalterre (Netherlands). It had a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist which stayed active until 1783 when the second church was consecrated, and also a brewery and a moat which still surrounds it today. The farm is currently privately owned and sometimes opens its doors for Open Farm Days.
