THE PORT AT THE END OF THE EARTH

THE PORT AT THE END OF THE EARTH

Description

“Finisterre dende a nube” (Finisterre from the cloud) is a project sponsored by Finisterre’s town council and financed with European funds in the framework of GAC4. It consists of two QR code-guided tours around the lighthouse and the beach of Mar de Fóra.

The routes will provide you with information about the local people, professions, customs, gastronomy, leisure and traditions, highlighting Cape Finisterre’s heritage and age-old bond with the sea. The area was distinguished with the European Heritage label in 2007.

Finisterre is considered to be the final point of the Costa da Morte. Its name, from the Latin finis terrae (end of the earth), seems to encapsulate the ancient Roman belief that the earth ends right here. This is also the finish point for thousands of pilgrims who make the journey to Santiago a little longer to meet the sea.

The port of Finisterre is the place where most of the town’s business activity takes place. There you can feel the town’s daily life, as almost all of its 5000+ habitants are engaged in fishing-related activities. Everything in Finisterre revolves around the sea. The town itself grew up around the port.

Walk around the dock and watch sailors working, step inside Galicia’s first public fish auction market and listen to the auctioneer’s chant; smell the salty breeze and savor the delicious, freshest local cuisine in one of its restaurants.
