The bilge pumps are used for removing the water that filters into the hull of the boat.
They are very important on a wooden boat on which, in spite of protective treatment, water filtration is usual.
The exact number and availability of original water pumps on the Carmen Flores are unknown. It is known that they were located at the centre of the boat and that they sucked up accumulated water through bronze pipes.
Because of safety, comfort and regulations issues, the boat is equipped with modern bilge pumps but the traditional pumps are also functional.
