Eglise Notre Dame

Eglise Notre Dame
Eglise Notre Dame
Eglise Notre Dame

Description

Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it is also placed under the patronage of Saint Léobon, a hermit who lived nearby. Built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries, it features a handsome side portal, attractive capitals and, on the village square side, two enfeus whose tombs have now disappeared. Behind the choir, in a small square, you'll find a well thought to be of Gallo-Roman origin. Inside the church, in the shape of a rib-vaulted Latin cross, the chapel on the left contains the tomb of Abbé Géraud (Musée de Guéret). The choir features an interesting granite high-relief depicting the Virgin and Child, a type reminiscent of the Auvergne virgins (13th century). The sculpture, simple but curious, bears close resemblance to the Virgin and Child at the front of the southern portal of the Eglise d'Guéret
