Gabelle Tower

Gabelle Tower

Description

The Gabelle Tower (a former indirect tax levied on salt) is an integral part of the fortifications that have delineated the town since the end of the 12th century. Unearthed in 1989 and preserved to a height of approximately one metre, this tower occupies the right bank of the Hoyoux on the edge of the Gabelle hill. It consists of a raised base of bonded limestone, with an irregular elevation, also in stone. Remains of the walls linking the various towers are adjacent to it.

Building listed on 1st October 1992
