On 14 April 1471 near this spot, the Battle of Barnet was fought, a decisive battle in the War of the Roses. Under cover of darkness, the Yorkists moved close to the Lancastrians, and clashed in a thick fog at dawn. The battle lasted from two to three hours, and was over by the time the fog lifted in the early morning, with the Yorkists triumphant.
