Sombreffe is an interesting example of a mediaeval lowland château. It can be divided into two parts: an upper courtyard, with a porch-tower and dungeon, and a lower courtyard, protected by a polygonal enclosing wall with circular towers, and by a moat. The 15th-century dungeon has a fine upper floor, with a rib-vaulted ceiling, a fireplace, window-seats, and latrines. The lower courtyard was reached via the gatehouse which, like the other towers, has arrow-slits and cannon-holes.
