Like the 13th-century fortress which preceded it, the Château de Rixensart has a quadrilateral ground plan and a castle chapel, now a parish church. The four wings of the château were built between 1631 and 1662 and are punctuated by octagonal towers and a porchtower. However, its most distinctive feature is the colonnaded gallery consisting of depressed arches supported by Tuscan columns in white stone. The residence of the princes of Mérode is currently being restored.
