ECLUSE DU CARNET

The Canal maritime de la Basse-Loire, 15km long and dug between 1882 and 1892 following the silting up of the access channel to the Loire estuary, was a titanic project for its time.

It doubled the length of the Loire from Frossay to Le Pellerin, enabling deep-draught sailing boats to sail up the river to Nantes. Despite intense activity in the shipping industry, it was only used for 20 years until 1913, when it became a boat graveyard from 1921 to 1927. Today, it regulates the water flow in the area and is a paradise for fishing and birdwatching.
The Carnet lock is one of the canal's 3 main lock structures, and a great place for nature lovers to take a stroll. The Carnet walking trail passes through the lock.
