You'll discover a wide variety of landscapes along the banks of the Loire, and an extremely rich and varied architectural heritage spanning centuries of history and human activity (menhirs and dolmens, troglodyte dwellings, amphitheatre and remains of a Gallo-Roman village, mills, châteaux, churches and priories, etc.).

Until the 19th century, the Loire was the main, if not the only, route for trade and exchange - land routes were underdeveloped and unsafe. This was reflected in the transport of tuffeau - a noble limestone that is a sign of the Loire Valley's cultural identity - used to build countless stately homes, abbeys, towns and villages.
